Vila Vella Tossa de Mar

Tossa’s medieval city walls and Old Town. Tossa de Mar is a unique example of a medieval fortified town and is also the only town on the Costa Brava and the whole of the Catalan coast to have an almost perfectly preserved medieval town centre. The buildings here are listed. The coastal city walls charcterise the town and serve as its landmark.
Providing protection against pirates, the city walls were built between the 12th and 14th centuries and extended in the 16th century. Guards manned the seven watchtowers round the clock to warn the population of impending danger so that they could take refuge inside the city walls. The best known towers are the Torre d'en Joanas, which rises up above the bay, and the Torre de las Horas (clocktower) at the entrance to the Patio de Armas (arsenal). When Tossa de Mar enjoyed its heyday in the 15th century, there were about 80 houses within the city walls. Some of these were built on to the walls themselves which acted as housewalls. Directly above the cliffs, at the highest point of the Old Town, there once stood a castle with a watchtower. However it has not survived and the Tossa Lighthouse stands in its place today.
A walk through the streets of the Old Town is highly recommended. Start out at the edge of the Playa Gran beach and go up as far as the Tossa Lighthouse where you will get a spectacular view of the steep coastline and the town of Tossa de Mar. On the way, one of the things you will pass by are the ruins of the late Gothic church Església Vella de Sant Vicenç from the 15th century where concerts are held from time to time. From there you should also go inside the City Walls where you will find a host of beautiful houses and winding streets as well as a number of welcoming cafes and restaurants.
By night, the illuminated City Walls provide a breathtaking and highly romantic setting best enjoyed from the terraces of the promenade or the beach itself.
