Historical sculpture on the Salou esplanade

In the middle of the esplanade Passeig de Jaume I is the monument of its namesake. This monument helps the town of Salou to commemorate the most important event in their history when, in 1229, the king Jaume I left for sea with his armies to conquer the Balearic Isles.

The statue is surrounded by water and a tall obelisque attracts the attention of passers-by. However, you should also take a look at the floor, where you can see the shields of the princes who left to take part in the military expedition to the archipelago.

The monument was built in 1965 by the architect Salvador Ripoli and the sculptor Lluís Maria Saumells.
