At the highest point of the Old Town, directly above the cliffs and 70 metres above sea level stands Tossas lighthouse dating back to 1917. A medieval watchtower originally occupied the site but unfortunately this is no longer standing.
If you walk up along the Paseo de la Villa Vella following the coast, passing the ruins of the late Gothic Església Vella de Sant Vicenç, you will come straight to the lighthouse. There is a museum inside, full of information on nautical signalling. The official museum tour which consists of various short films and exhibits, gives a detailed history of the first beacons and lighthouses, the development of the technology, and the lives of the lighthouse-keepers. To be able to enjoy this visit, you need to have a genuine interest in, or already have some knowledge of the subject matter.
If you are not particularly interested in the subject, it is best to have a cool beer or a coffee in the adjoining cafe whilst enjoying the relaxing view of the sea.
