Fiestas Events Blanes

During the summer months there is an extensive program of fiestas, activities and events on offer in Blanes: Sardanas performance, the traditional Catalan dance in which people dance in a circle to exceedingly complicated dance steps; Habeneras, the Caribbean songs which were “brought across” from Cuba in the 19th century. The fisherman learned the songs from their fellow countrymen who emigrated to Cuba and added a touch of their own character to them; Dance festivals, concerts, sporting activities, handicraft workshops etc.
Highly recommended are the following festivals or fiestas of Blanes:

End of July: Fiesta Mayor, town festival in honour of the town’s patron saint Santa Anna. The highlight of the week-long festivities during the final week of July is undoubtedly the International Fireworks Contest, a tradition which dates back to 1906 although it first took the form of a competition in 1970. Every evening, once darkness falls, national and international contestants battle it out for victory. The fireworks are showcased against the magnificent backdrop of the Sa Palomera Peninsula and the sea. Every evening between 120,000 and 150,000 people turn out to witness this breathtaking spectacle.
Tip: You don’t necessarily need to be stood on the Sa Palomera Peninsula unless, that is, you want to be right there amongst the action. Some people opt for other viewing spots on the beach or in the hills which are worthy alternatives.

21st August: Fiesta Mayor pequeña, “small town festival” in honour of Saints Bonosio and Maximiniano. A number of musical, cultural and sporting activities take place, including a regatta. The best known and most faithful event to the town festival’s origins, is the night-walk during the night of the 20th to the 21st August, the Caminada Popular Nit de Sant Bonosio.
