The largest marina in Europe on the Costa Brava

With some 30 kilometres of navigable canals and 5,000 moorings, Empuriabrava, often called "the Miami of Europe", is the largest marina in Europe. Empuriabrava is the perfect holiday destination for leisure sailors and professional skippers. Many of the houses in Empuriabrava (Span. Ampuriabrava) have their own jetties and boats. From there, you can take a boat or yacht along the canals and out into the sea, and discover the beautiful bays and beaches around Empuriabrava and the Costa Brava. If you’re planning a holiday in Empuriabrava, it’s best to rent a boat and, if possible, a holiday house or apartment close to or directly on a canal, because the canals are the most attractive features of Empuriabrava.
Planned city
Empuriabrava was planned on the drawing board in the mid-1960s. The architects had in mind a canal city in which as many houses as possible would have access to the water and their own jetty in a private garden. They succeeded!
Because of the date it was established, Empuriabrava has no old town or historic buildings. The best-known building and landmark in Empuriabrava is the tower at the Club Nautic marina. It has no historic value, but provides a good view over the city and surrounding Costa Brava.
Some 6 km from Empuriabrava is the municipality’s mediaeval city of Castello Empuries, where you can take in those historic buildings missing from Empuriabrava. A trip here is highly recommended. You can of course spend the night here in a hotel, but unlike Empuriabrava, Castelló is not directly on the sea.
Magnet for skydivers
Believe it or not, Empuriabrava is one of the leading skydiving centres in the world, with 125,000 jumps per year. The ideal conditions in the Bay of Roses and the stunning background scenery have doubtless contributed to its success. Scenic flights along the Costa Brava and over the wonderful nature reserves in the region start from the airport close to Empuriabrava.
Surrounded by nature reserves
There are two nature reserves close to Empuriabrava. The closer one can be found in the Aiguamolls wetlands on both sides of the city, a protected area for numerous water birds and the ideal place for a bicycle ride. North of Empuriabrava and the Bay of Roses is the Cap de Creus nature reserve with its impressive wooded hills and rock formations.
The region behind Empuriabrava is an important wine-growing area where top-class wines with the Empordà-Costa Brava designation of origin are produced.
Numerous cellars in this wine-growing area of 36 townships offer wine tastings and direct sales (see also Emporda wine region).
Long sandy beaches
Empuriabrava is located in a plain bordering the long Bay of Roses. There are three wide stretches of fine sandy beaches in Empuriabrava. There are none of the typical small bays of the Costa Brava along this section of coast. The bays start north of Roses at Cap de Creus, or south at L’Escala.
There are three generous sand beaches in front of the canal city.
