Church of Santa Maria and Palace of the Viscounts

In the centre of Blanes is the Gothic Church of Santa Maria and the adjoining ruins of the Palace of the Viscounts of Cabrera. It was they who mainly financed the building of the Gothic church throughout the 14th to the 15th century. The majority of the palace was destroyed in the war against France during the 17th century. Up until 1936 the church was one of the best maintained Gothic churches in the area. Inside there used to be a baroque retable on the main altar, as well as 17 side altars with their own magnificent retables, and two pulpits, which were the work of Antonio Gaudí. In 1936, during the first year of the Spanish Civil War, these treasures were all destroyed in a fire. At the end of the war the three-aisled church was restored. The Gothic style of the facade, vestry and bell tower has been kept. The bell tower, with its square base, is on two stories, with pointed-arch windows on each side. The main entrance is framed with graded, pointed arches.
